How Often Should Automatic Doors Be Serviced?

Automatic doors work hard. A busy entrance can open and close thousands of times a day, so regular servicing is the best way to keep it safe and reliable.
The short answer
As a general guide, automatic doors should be serviced at least once a year. Busy or high-risk entrances often need more frequent visits, such as every three to six months.
What affects how often you need a service
- Footfall: the more people use the door, the faster it wears.
- Environment: dust, weather, cleaning chemicals and exposed entrances all take a toll.
- Door type and age: older doors and heavier systems need closer attention.
- Who uses it: healthcare, schools and public buildings carry higher safety expectations.
What a service includes
A proper service goes beyond a quick look. An engineer will typically:
- Inspect the operator, drive system, tracks, rollers and fixings
- Test and adjust sensors and safety devices
- Check opening and closing speeds and forces
- Check emergency and power-failure behaviour
- Clean and lubricate moving parts
- Record what was found and what was done
Why regular servicing pays off
Planned servicing catches worn parts before they fail, which means fewer emergency call-outs and less downtime. It helps keep doors safe for users, supports your health and safety duties and gives you a record to show your doors have been looked after. See our guide to BS EN 16005 for the safety standard behind this.
What happens if you skip servicing?
Small faults grow. Sensors drift, belts wear and settings change until a door fails or becomes unsafe, often at the worst moment. A planned contract is usually cheaper and less disruptive than repeated emergency repairs.
