Automatic Door Not Working? What to Check Before You Call an Engineer

Commercial automatic swing door

When an automatic door stops working, it can disrupt your whole building. A few safe checks may solve a simple problem, and will help our engineers if you do need to call.

Safe checks to try first

  1. Check the mode switch. Many doors have a selector or key switch. Make sure it is set to automatic and not locked or night mode.
  2. Check the power. Look for a tripped circuit breaker or switched-off isolator supplying the door.
  3. Look for obstructions. Anything in the door path or the floor guide can stop it. Keep hands out of the track while the door is powered.
  4. Check the sensors. Dirt, stickers, posters or cobwebs over a sensor can stop it detecting people. A gentle wipe with a soft cloth can help.
  5. Check floor mats and items. A curled mat or loose item can trigger or block the door.
  6. Check access control. If the door is linked to a keypad or card reader, make sure that system is working.

What not to do

  • Do not force the door open or shut
  • Do not remove covers or touch wiring
  • Do not bypass or disable safety sensors
